AHA vs BHA vs PHA: Which Chemical Exfoliant Should You Use?
Chemical exfoliation is one of the most effective tools in skincare — but the alphabet soup of AHA, BHA, and PHA trips up even experienced skincare enthusiasts.
AHA — Alpha Hydroxy Acids
AHAs are water-soluble acids that work on the skin's surface to dissolve the bonds holding dead skin cells together. The most common types:
- Glycolic acid — smallest molecule, deepest penetration, most effective for anti-aging and brightening
- Lactic acid — gentler than glycolic, also hydrating (bonds to water molecules), ideal for sensitive/dry skin
- Mandelic acid — largest molecule, mildest AHA, good entry point for beginners
Best for: Uneven texture, dullness, hyperpigmentation, fine lines, dry or normal skin.
BHA — Beta Hydroxy Acids
Salicylic acid is the only BHA used in skincare. Its defining characteristic: it's oil-soluble, meaning it can penetrate into pores clogged with sebum.
- Clears blackheads and whiteheads from the inside
- Naturally anti-inflammatory — soothes redness alongside exfoliating
- Available in 0.5%–2% concentrations; higher isn't always better
Best for: Acne-prone, oily skin with clogged pores, blackheads, or active breakouts.
PHA — Polyhydroxy Acids
PHAs (gluconolactone, lactobionic acid) are the newest generation of chemical exfoliants. Their larger molecular size means slower skin penetration:
- Much gentler than AHAs — suitable for sensitive or compromised skin
- Also act as humectants, drawing moisture into skin
- Good option for rosacea-prone skin or those new to chemical exfoliation
Best for: Very sensitive skin, rosacea, beginners, or anyone whose skin reacts to AHAs.
Can You Combine Them?
AHA + BHA together is a popular combo and is well-tolerated by most skin types. Many brands sell pre-formulated blends. Apply on dry skin after cleansing; follow with moisturizer and sunscreen in the morning.
Avoid layering with retinoids or vitamin C in the same routine — the pH interactions reduce efficacy and increase irritation risk.
